An academic initiative, Work Integrated Learning

Industry Environment
I was based at the Car Body Shell Assembly line, where precision and process flow are critical to ensuring quality and safety. This facility represents one of the leading practices in South African rail manufacturing, driven by high standards in process engineering, manufacturing systems, and lean practices.
Value Contributed
My focus was on improving the setup time, safety, and overall workflow within the Car Body Shell Assembly process, specifically targeting the Trailer Car Ramp system. The system’s setup time, which previously ranged between 5 to 30 minutes, was optimized to a more efficient 1 to 5 minutes, enhancing both productivity and operational safety.
Purpose & Context
As part of my academic program in Industrial Engineering, I took part in a project with Gibela Rail to gain practical exposure in a real-world manufacturing environment. The aim was to observe, analyze, and propose improvements to assembly processes, applying classroom knowledge directly to industry challenges while building insights into large-scale rail production.

INAT Techathon Competition

Team Involvemnt
I collaborated closely with a small, multidisciplinary team during the Techathon, including fellow Industrial Engineering student Thulani Sithole and team member Michael Ngirande from Kenya. Together, we engaged in the end-to-end production process of the Hippo Water Roller, including material selection, molding, assembly, and ergonomics. This teamwork provided hands-on experience in process optimization, workflow improvement, and collaborative problem-solving, all within the context of developing socially and environmentally responsible solutions aligned with Appropriate Technology principles.
Our Project
Our project specifically addressed SDG 3 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The objective was to enhance usability, production efficiency, and sustainability, applying industrial engineering principles to develop a practical, innovative, and socially impactful solution for communities reliant on this produ
Purpose & Context
As part of the INAT (International Appropriate Technology) Techathon, a 6-week virtual student competition, I participated in a project aimed at improving the Hippo Water Roller, a community-focused water transportation product. The Techathon challenges students to design and build solutions that are culturally sensitive, ecologically balanced, and economically sustainable, reflecting the principles of Appropriate Technolo

Apha RollerX

The Project focused on improving setup time, safety, and workflow efficiency of the Hippo Water Roller production process, targeting the following Sustainable Development Goals:
Project Value Contribution
SDG 3 – Clean Water and Sanitation: Improved ergonomics and usability to make water transport easier and safer for communities.
SDG 13 – Climate Action: Reduced material waste and promoted sustainable manufacturing practices.
SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: Optimized production processes, including molding and assembly, to enhance efficiency and workflow.
Personal Projects
Design Communication
By turning ideas into visual concepts, I help businesses and individuals better understand and present their products before production.
Creative Problem-Solving
Blender allows me to experiment with design thinking, bringing innovative solutions to projects that need clear and impactful presentation.
3D Product Modeling
I use Blender to create realistic digital models of products, which can be used for advertising, concept visualization, and prototyping.
